Everyday Self-care- BEL
“Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to others and “things” and watch yourself bloom.” Jing.fm.
Self-care is what every human does!
Then why is self-care in the mainstream conversation? People are living longer, and many have access to advanced medical services compared to a few decades ago. However, many people continue to suffer and die from preventative/treatable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, addictions, obesity, clinical depression, and others.
Before you question your self-care routine, examine your biology, environment, and lifestyle https://www.nih.gov/health-information.
Biology gives us about a fifty percent chance of having everything our parents have “good or bad.” Educate yourself and research the health history of your parents, grandparents, and close family members. Knowing thyself can help you decide on your mental, emotional, and physical health. For example, if your parents or grandparents live with alcoholism, stay away from alcohol and alcoholics. Or, if your mother or father is obese and has diabetes, eat junk and salty food only on your birthday.
Importantly, be honest with your primary care physician about your family health history. Also, for your benefit, erase the stigma and inform your doctor if your parent lives with mental illness such as clinical depression, schizophrenia, or others. Why? For prevention with immunization, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment!
The Environment: For your proper self-care, if you can leave an abusive home, toxic workplace, or relationships, leave now! A negative environment affects our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Sometimes, emotional abuse can result in low productivity and unhappiness. APA asserts that happy people are more likely to be successful in their careers, relationships, and health.
Define your Lifestyle! Our lifestyle influences how we live, a meaningful or miserable life! Four US presidential candidates are in their 70s, and all of them have a brutal schedule. Why are they still able to run around the whole country campaigning? Maybe because of their genes, family support, or positive attitude. How is your thought, feeling, or action speaks on your health, family, community, religion, career, hobbies, or culture?
You can choose to be alive and well so that you can do other things. Know your worth, and take proper care of yourself!
Which one comes first, your health, career, or family?
